Seasonal Activities v.V // Performer Profile: Diana Kolpak “BLUE”

Blue seasonal no text

artist:

Creative adventures have taken Diana Kolpak from performing liposuction on herself to being a prima ballerina to seeking fallen stars in frozen wastelands to fighting epic cream-pie battles. Clown makes all her dreams come true.

abstract:

BLUE is an interactive solo musical about the highs and lows of love. Stylistically, it’s clown meets the Blues by way of 30’s Berlin cabaret with a little detour through Las Vegas. The first song is set. The rest of the songs (all original) are chosen by the audience, so the tone and narrative structure of each performance is different. Lounge singer Sally Siren serves as guide, interacting with the audience, introducing each song with minimal improvised dialogue, and singing either a cappella or while accompanying herself on a toy piano. It’s a wonderful ride for everyone.

Seasonal Activities v.V // Performer Profile: Norm Reynolds

WEB-SMALL-NormReynolds-14apr12_0019

artist:

Norm Reynolds is a member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada. A hit at the inaugural Summerworks Festival (CBC Radio, NOW Magazine), Put Up Your Hand went on to be one of four scripts chosen for the WordWorks Festival at Solar Stage. Reynolds has published short fiction in the United States and Canada, and book reviews in the Canadian national press. He currently teaches English and Drama in Toronto.

abstract:

My dad died in 2000. The following year, I ended a long-standing friendship (not romantic). It struck me that both experiences of loss physically felt the same. I had the good fortune to workshop my play idea with Edward Albee at the Humber School for Writers. Albee said: “That’s a really wonderful monologue. If you put it at the end, you might have something.” I did. After some reimagining, The Good-bye Play had its premiere at Theatre Aurora’s Playwrights of Spring Festival, and TheatreStarts.

As the promo for the play says, some relationships never die. Leo and Patricia have split. Patricia has come back for closure. Leo isn’t having any of it. A comedy about grievances, petty and great, and the difficulty of finally saying good-bye.

GINA_001_Promo

artist:

Quietly compelling Aussie-Canadian singer-songwriter GINA HORSWOOD is a musical force to be reckoned with. Now based in Toronto, Horswood has travelled far and wide for her music, as a true modern troubadour. She’s recorded in Australia, where her debut Our Way, penned with her sister Melanie, was released in 2006 and boasted two Top 10 country singles down under. Her video for “Ordinary Girl,” from her sophomore album Crazy Brilliant Mess, reached the top 50 on Australia’s Country Music Channel charts. In Nashville, she gained the attention of renowned songwriter and producer Jim Reilley, recording The Nashville Sessions EP. Now in Muskoka, she’s recorded her third full length-album Porcelain with producer Andre Wahl (Luke Doucet, Hawksley Workman).

Call for Performers

Seasonal Activities, v. V

CALL FOR PERFORMERS

Seasonal Activities is a series of live performance. It strives to bring artists and audiences of disparate backgrounds together to the same space, opening conversations between participants of the often-individual Toronto arts disciplines.

I am looking for new or pre-existing pieces, running 5 – 20 minutes in length.
Projects can be of any live performance style.
They should be able to work in an intimate setting with low tech.
Pieces should be willing to acknowledge the audience and interrupt their experience beyond traditional staging. Interpret this how you like.

Volume V will take place Saturday, April 30th @ hub14 (14 Markham Street, Toronto, ON)

Tickets will be $15 @ the door / $10 in advance

Seasonal Activities will provide:

  • Company Artist fees will come as a profit-share of ticket sales
  • Basic tech (simple lighting / the ability to rig a couple specials / audio support) & stage management
  • One performance and tech time (times TBD during the evening of April 26th)
  • Audience feedback if desired

To submit, please send:

  1. A short description of your piece (100 words max.)
  2. Technical needs, including length of performance and number of performers
  3. Artist bios
  4. Support material (if submitting links, include it in the package with sufficient headings or short descriptions of what lies beyond. Links will be clicked, but please don’t send me to pages I’d rather not open)
    • videos can be submitted via links to online postings (I probably won’t watch more than 5 minutes of any given thing… but who knows?)
    • photos can be submitted the same way (links to online albums), or as attachments (5 photos max.)
    • music can be attached as .mp3s or links to streaming content
    • websites (I will browse webpages, but specific links with reasons are most welcome)
    • script samples (send it all – a 20 minute performance can’t be that wordy, right?)

All material can be sent as .pdf or .jpeg where applicable and sent to afieldofcrowns@gmail.com by

Friday, April 8th @ 11:59pm, 2016
